In Memory

Sandie Coon (Peterson)

Sandie Coon (Peterson)

Sandie was born July 15, 1944 to Don and Marge Coon.  Her mother was from the Tweedy Family of South Gate, and Sandie kept close to her all her life.  Sandie attended Bryson Avenue Elementary School and South Gate Junior High for a time until her family moved to Newport Beach in 1958.  Sandie came back to South Gate High School for her senior year and graduated with us in the Winter Class.

Just after high school, she and Conrad Peterson, S’61, married and they had three children:  twin boys, Troy and Travis and a daughter, Casey.  Sadly, both boys have passed away, one after being in a coma for years from a skateboard accident when he was 14.  Sandie and Conrad eventually divorced.  Sandie and her mom lived in San Juan Capistrano and Sandie worked in the insurance industry for years.  She retired from the Auto Club in 2008.

We remember Sandie with her beautiful red hair, captivating smile, and outgoing personality.  She had a great sense of humor, an unforgettable laugh, and was fun to be around!  She was a doer, loved decorating, quilting as a passion, and needlepoint.  Although she had much sadness and tragedy in her life, with the death of her sons, and lived with and cared for her ill mom until she passed away, she didn’t want a "pity party" or to feel sorry for herself.  Her daughter, Casey, blessed her with two granddaughters, Brittany (24) and Megan (17), who were the biggest joys of her life, and she recently was blessed to have a great-grandson, Jaxson, who increased that joy a hundred fold!!

Sandie lived in Vista over the last ten years and kept up with her friends.  She almost came to our 50th Reunion, but because she had emphysema and was on oxygen, it was difficult for her to breathe at times and so she wasn’t able to attend.  The last six months of her life she was on hospice and passed away on January 1, 2016.

Sandie is now at peace and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.  Rest in Peace dear Classmate!  Thank you to her cousin, Sheila Carlin Sissung, W’63, for providing much of the information on Sandie.

Those We Love…

Those we love remain with us….

In the whisper of the wind

In a soft rain that falls from Heaven

In each sunrise

In every single star that lights the night sky and

In every single memory we hold within our hearts.

My prayers and thoughts are with you… Ron

In addition, both of her parents were graduates of South Gate.  Her brother Mike became an avid surfer during the summers at his grandmothers house in Newport Beach.  Mike, later joined the Navy but had many social set backs after discharge, then death, which took a toll on Sandie.

We laughed and told various family related stories durining the re-unions along with long phone calls over the years....... "You had a full life and kept your humor through all the messes... stay GREAT"

Years ago I ran into Sandie at our State Farm Insurance agent's office where she was working here in Mission Viejo!  She looked the same...her beautiful red hair, warm smile, and it was like we were back in high school again!  We talked a bit but I regret we never made plans to get together.  What a beautiful, strong person she was and may God hold her close to His heart!  No more sadness, no more suffering.  Rest in peace, sweet friend!!
