In Memory

Mariel Brooks (Thomsen)

Mariel Brooks (Thomsen)

It is with deep sadness that we share that Mariel Brooks Thomsen passed away October 18, 2014, just a month before her 70th birthday.  Mariel grew up in South Gate, attended Tweedy Elementary, South Gate Junior and Senior High Schools and was a bright student, who participated in many clubs and activities, and had a sweet, warm, friendly personality!  She went on to obtained her BA in 1966 from the University of California Berkeley and that same year Mariel and her husband, Gary, were married.  They had three wonderful sons, Scott, Eric and Paul.  In 1976 Mariel received her MED from Eastern New Mexico University and spent many years teaching high school. She and Gary have lived in Incline Village, Nevada for some time. Mariel became a grandmother a year ago to a precious little girl, Elizabeth, and just recently had the opportunity to see her.  Mariel fought a long, hard battle with breast cancer. She was dearly loved by her husband of 48 years, their family and friends.  May the Lord comfort them and may she rest in His peace.

I'll pray for the family at this most difficult time. I have fond memory's of Mariel from our times at Tweedy School, she invited me to my first boy-girl party. That was the first time I tried dancing, Not a pretty site.

Mariel is in Heaven now with no pain, looking down at those she loved saying, "It's okay, I'm home now."  To her family may you find peace knowing she is being taken care of lovingly.

Mariel always had a smile and a cheerful comment to everyone.  She was Worthy Advisor in South Gate, part of the Masonic Order.  We car-pooled our first year to Long Beach State along with Judy Fitzhugh and Cheryl Fitsji.  We talked and had great fun at a girl's sleepover.  Good memories to share.  God bless.

A bright light has been extinguished from this world, only to light up another.  Condolences to the family--so sorry for your loss.  Only time will help heal the loss.

So sad to hear of Mariel's passing!  What a beautiful person Mariel was, both inside and outside!  I, too, remember her sweet personality, infectious smile, and gentle, positive nature.  May the Lord comfort your family and fill the huge void with precious memories of good times and the blessing of having Mariel in your lives.  God bless you, sweet friend, and may you rest in His peace. With love, Bonnie

So sorry to hear about Mariel.  I remember so much about her from Tweedy Elementary. We practiced dancing during recess and I haven't thought about that in 60 years. Good memories of a very sweet girl.

I have just lost my buddy from the third grade.  We grew up  together and shared so many happy times which I will never forget.

I am at a loss for words at this time except to say my prayers are with Gary and her family.
