In Memory

Sharon Minkler (Gray)

Sharon Minkler (Gray)

Sharon Minkler Gray was born on December 16, 1944 and passed away a week after her 77th birthday on December 23, 2021.

Growing up, Sharon lived on Virginia in South Gate, went to Victoria Elementary School, and South Gate Junior and Senior High School.  She was very proud of the fact that she went directly to work the following Monday after graduation and worked for several companies as a bookkeeper.

Sharon had met Steve Gray (S’62) in junior high and they dated during high school and after and were married in October 1964.  Both avid Dodger fans, they loved going to Spring Training and keeping up with the Dodgers during baseball seasons!  Their first home was an apartment on Southern and then they lived in a house on Montara, near Tweedy and Long Beach Boulevard.  When Steve’s job was offering a transfer to a new area, they looked to buy a home in Mission Viejo, but Sharon decided she liked Bakersfield, so he transferred there and they bought a home.  Sharon went to work for Kern County, where she worked for 25 years before she retired.

Sharon and Steve divorced in October 1987 and they both remained living in Bakersfield.  They occasionally contacted one another even though they lived separate lives but shared being life-long Dodger fans.  Sharon also loved to travel and has been to London and Paris, as well as many U.S. states.  She also had many collections, including Mickey Mouse and Coke Cola ones.

When Spring Training began for the Dodgers in 2021, Sharon and Steve connected by phone and would watch the various games several times a week on TV at their respective homes and talk about the games, sometimes reminisce the good ole’ days, and information about mutual friends.  Then from October to December, Sharon began a battle with several medical issues and cancer that had not fully been diagnosed.  She needed help so Steve drove her to her various doctor appointments, ran errands for her, and picked up groceries now and then and would meet her out on her front porch.  Sharon spent 22 days in and out of a skilled nursing facility and sadly was in the process of being evaluated in a cancer center just before she passed away.

Sharon is survived by her two sisters, Carol and Gail, and niece Susan and nephew Darren. Her one final wish was to be buried in the family plot at Rose Hills in Whittier where she was laid to rest.  Rest in peace, dear classmate.

It is sad to know that we are all nearing the completion of the human life cycle on earth. But the Lord has given his promise, that whoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life in heaven. Dear Sharon, may you now be at peace with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
