In Memory

Sandy Symcovitz (Berg)

Sandy Symcovitz (Berg)

Sandy (Norene Joan) Symcovitz was born in Colorado Springs, CO on February 21, 1944. Norene, later nick named Sandy for her sandy blonde curls, was the 4th of 6 children. In her youth, Sandy and her family relocated to southern California where she would later attend South Gate High School.

This beautiful young lady would enjoy all aspects of high school, including editing the high school year book and becoming home coming queen her senior year. In her free time, she enjoyed hanging out at the beach, catching waves on her surf board and becoming Honored Queen in The International Order of Jobs Daughters. She would later attend Long Beach State as an Art Major.

Sandy was married in 1964, had her first son and shortly afterward found herself a single Mom. She worked alongside her Mom as a clerk at a 7-11 store in Long Beach, CA, where her Mom was manager. Apparently, the field manager of the franchise noticed how lovely Sandy was and asked her out to dinner. That was the beginning of a 46 year marriage to Dwight Berg. Combined, the newlywed couple started their new life with four sons and soon a baby girl arrived. Sandy would prove to be the most attentive, giving and lovable wife and mother. She took interest in art, cake decorating, loved to read and occasionally helped Dwight at a 7-11 they opened in Westwood, CA. Dwight was successful and Sandy was amazing. During their marriage they traveled and after the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, CA, where they lived, they retired to Hot Springs Village Arkansas.

Unfortunately, Sandy developed Crohns disease in her 50's. She never gave up hope in fighting to be cured. She was an inspiration to many staying active to help others with the disease. In early spring of 2014 Sandy began the battle of her life spending 10 weeks in and out of several hospitals with kidney failure and high blood sugar. Sandy went home to spend her final days with her family who rallied around this brave woman. She passed peacefully in Dwight's arms on August 20, 2014. She is survived by her husband Dwight, 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 4 siblings. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

Sandy will be remembered dearly by many classmates and missed by friends and family.  Rest in Peace!

I remember Sandy as one of the sweetest girls in school and was a classy lady!  She had a beautiful smile and was such a kind friend!  Didn't know she was a surfer girl, however!  Thank you, June, Sandy's dear friend, for sharing this beautiful euology with our classmates.  Our love and prayers to you, Dwight, and the family and know Sandy is dearly missed by those she loved and loved her.
