Dennis Rice

Dennis Rice

Dennis grew up in South Gate on Hildreth Avenue, attended Bryson Elementary School, South Gate Jr. and Sr. High Schools.  His parents owned Rice's Cafe on Atlantic, and he and his family were very active at the First Baptist Church.  He honorably served in the Air Force.  Dennis met his wife of 45 years, Linda Sue Whitley (S'67), at the First Baptist Church, where she worked in the office and his brother, Jim ('57), was her youth leader.  They have three sons, Josh, Jonny, and David, who is a pastor, and two grandsons, Josiah and Jonah.  Dennis became a chef and cooked professionally.  Working together in Christian Camping for 40 years took Dennis, Linda and family to several states and they moved to Tennessee seven and a half years ago, where they have worked as a couple at Christian-owned Whitestone Bed & Breakfast in foodservice.  Two of Dennis' four siblings, Jim ('57) and Mel (W'61) are alive and living in Southern California, and he and Linda recently spent a special time visiting with their families.  Although Dennis had some heart trouble, his death came suddenly and very unexpected on September 29, 2014.  He was dearly loved by his family and friends.  He will definitely be missed, but they know He is with the Lord.  A life truly well lived!

When I think of Dennis, I have fond memories of Dennis that date back to Bryson Elementary School.  He was such a genuine, nice, quiet guy and remained so into our high school days.  I would have loved to have gone to one of those Christian Camps where he and his wife worked and enjoyed his cuisine and sharing the Lord!  God bless him and his family and I know I will see him again!  Well done, good and faithful servant!

I also remember Dennis from as far back as Bryson Elementary and South Gate First Baptist.  I remember the time that he tried to avoid hitting a dog in fromt of his house and ended up hitting a tree, doing damage to his knees.  In my memory, the dog ran back and ended up between Dennis' vehicle and the tree.  That always talked about his caring nature.  I, too, look forward to seeing him in heaven one day.  Christians never have to say good-bye.

Somehow I missed this! I knew Dennis, Jim and Mel and their mom and dad. All 3 boys were such great gentlemen, and they all loved the Lird. I was blessed to see Jim and his wife Sharon nee Weaver a few years ago. I knew Dennis'wife Linda Whitley too. I pray comfort for all Rice & Whitley families. I'll see Dennis when we all get to heaven, what a glorious day that will be!
